Coastguard Radio Operator Volunteer - Bay of Plenty

Coastguard Radio Operators are at the nerve centre of our operations, the connection between our volunteers on the water and up in the sky, boaties and emergency services. Based in our Tauranga Unit you will be part of our nationwide team which operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
What you can expect from a typical day:
- Logging trip reports from boaties
- Communicating vital information across marine radio
- Taking calls from the public for marine emergencies and on water assistance
- Providing the communication link between Coastguard shore teams and on water rescue crew
- Working as part of a team communicating closely with other agencies, such as the Police, Ambulance, Fire and the local Harbourmaster.
To become a Coastguard Volunteer Radio Operator, you do not need any formal qualifications. We provide you with the training and skills you need to make a difference at no cost to you.
What we’re looking for:
- Someone who is prepared to volunteer on a regular roster that is season dependent
- Someone with a keen eye for detail and professionalism and good computer and keyboard skills
- Someone with good hearing, good listening skills and a clear voice that is understandable over the airwaves
- Someone who can work with confidence and provide a calm reassuring voice during emergencies
- A team player with the ability to receive, interpret and relay information in time critical situations
