Student Volunteer Conservation Opportunity at Taihinui Historical Reserve

Recently graduated? Want a break from studying? Looking to gain skills in conservation? Come and join Louis, one of our experienced conservation facilitator this Oct, Nov and December. Every Thursday, Louis will be heading into Taihinui Historical Reserve to undertake conservation work, and you can join him and learn valuable skills. Taihinui Historical Reserve is beautiful mature bush area located in Greenhithe, Auckland, along the Hellyers/Oruamo Escarpment.
There are mature pōhutukawa, a nikau grove, mature pūriri, giant tanekaha, coastal kōwhai and more. The trail into the reserve is informal & rough in places. A good level of fitness is required for this activity.
Come and work alongside Louis as he removes elaeagnus, woolly nightshade, moth plant and wild ginger. We've been removing these pest plants from the reserve for a couple of years & there is still a bit more to go!
Your efforts are rewarded with stunning views of the inner Waitemata Harbour and being away from the sounds of the city, whilst basking under beautiful mature native bush - all in our backyard. Create new friendships and help nature thrive by Caring for Greenhithe's environment.
Morning tea is provided, but please bring a cold drink, if required.
In the event of bad weather, a note will be placed on the Greenhithe Community Trust Ecology Facebook page and an email to those who have registered.
Friends of Taihinui Historical Reserve is a Greenhithe Community Trust Initiative, and is supported by the Upper Harbour Local Board, and Auckland Council.
We also have opportunities to help out during the week. Search for our Wainoni Park, Outlook Reserve & Oratau Reserve groups.
No conservation skills/experience is required - just bring your enthusiasm and willingness to learn.
