We are looking for an experienced Learning & Training Designer to help us review, simplify and further develop our existing training and learning content.
HOST already delivers training and has a range of content, resources and subject-matter expertise. We want to develop this into accessible, flexible and modular learning that works for people with different levels of knowledge and experience — from those seeking the fundamentals to those wanting to deepen and apply existing knowledge.
Working with our team and subject-matter experts, you will help create learning that provides different entry points and pathways. We want people to be able to learn at their own pace, revisit and reflect on content, and build their knowledge over time.
What you will do
- Review and restructure existing training, identifying what should be retained, simplified, updated or further developed.
- Turn complex content into clear, accessible and engaging learning modules.
- Work with staff and subject-matter experts to identify learner needs and learning outcomes.
- Design flexible learning pathways from foundational knowledge through to deeper learning and application.
- Create modules that can stand alone while also connecting and building on one another.
- Develop activities, scenarios, reflection questions and knowledge checks that support learning and practical application.
- Adapt content for online learning and learning management platforms.
- Consider accessibility, cultural responsiveness, inclusion and different learning needs.
- Help establish a consistent approach for future HOST learning and training resources.
What we are looking for
You will have:
- Demonstrated experience in learning design, instructional design, training or curriculum development, or a related field.
- Experience reviewing existing training and developing modular learning for people with different levels of knowledge and experience.
- Experience with online learning and learning management systems or other digital learning platforms.
- A good understanding of adult learning, learner-centred and inclusive design.
- The ability to simplify complex information without losing important meaning or context.
- Experience working with subject-matter experts.
- Strong writing, communication and organisational skills.
Experience designing learning for diverse or multicultural audiences, or within community, not-for-profit, education or social services settings, would be an advantage.
This is a skilled volunteering role for someone with existing learning-design experience.
Experience with a particular learning platform or previous Aotearoa New Zealand work experience is not required.
We welcome relevant experience gained overseas, and people from former refugee and migrant backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
What you will gain
- Use your professional expertise to contribute to positive outcomes for former refugee and migrant communities.
- Help shape HOST’s approach to learning and create resources that can reach more people, more flexibly.
- Apply your skills to learning for people with diverse backgrounds, experiences and levels of existing knowledge.
- Work alongside subject-matter experts within an Aotearoa New Zealand not-for-profit and community context.
- Develop meaningful learning products that may contribute to your professional portfolio, where appropriate.
- Flexible volunteering around your other commitments.
Commitment
- Ideally three to six months.
- Around 2–4 hours per week.
- Work from home or from our Wellington CBD office.
- Meet regularly with relevant HOST staff and subject-matter experts, online or in person.
- Ability to complete NZ Police Vetting.
Support
Full induction and ongoing support will be provided. HOST will bring the programme knowledge, subject-matter expertise and existing content; you will bring the learning-design expertise to help us turn it into effective learning.
