HOST International Aotearoa New Zealand

Logo for HOST International Aotearoa New Zealand

We are looking for an experienced volunteer writer and storyteller to help us share the stories, experiences and impact of our work. Through thoughtful and engaging storytelling, you will help strengthen the visibility and voice of former refugee and migrant communities, build greater understanding of their experiences and contributions, and help HOST connect with communities, supporters and partners. You will interview people and develop engaging content for our website, social media and other communications, helping ensure stories are shared with care, dignity and authenticity.

What you will do

  • Develop story ideas and create engaging content for our website, social media and other platforms.
  • Interview people involved with or supported by our organisation and help them share their stories.
  • Work with interviewees to ensure they understand how their stories may be used and provide informed consent before publication.
  • Handle personal and sensitive information with care, maintaining confidentiality and privacy.
  • Work with staff to check facts, gain approvals and ensure stories are accurate, respectful and culturally sensitive.
  • Tell compelling stories without sensationalising experiences, making assumptions or reinforcing stereotypes.
  • Adapt stories and content for different audiences and platforms.

What we are looking for

You will have:

  • Strong writing, storytelling and editing skills, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated experience creating engaging content for both websites and social media.
  • Confidence and sensitivity when interviewing people and building trust.
  • An understanding of, or genuine interest in, the experiences of diverse communities from former refugee and migrant backgrounds.
  • A strong understanding of consent, confidentiality, privacy and ethical storytelling.
  • An understanding of how social media can support community engagement and connection.
  • Confidence using platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.
  • Good judgement, reliability and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Openness to feedback and a commitment to respectful, people-centred communications.
  • Graphic design, photography or other content creation skills would be an advantage.

Experience

This role is best suited to an experienced writer and storyteller who can confidently interview people and create content for both websites and social media. Experience in a community, social services or migrant/refugee context would be an advantage but is not essential.

We welcome applications from people who bring relevant skills and experience from outside Aotearoa New Zealand. No previous New Zealand work experience is required.

People from former refugee and migrant backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.

What we offer

  • The opportunity to use your professional skills to strengthen the visibility and voice of former refugee and migrant communities and increase awareness of HOST’s work and impact.
  • Experience working alongside a team supporting former refugee and migrant communities.
  • Flexible volunteer arrangements, discussed around your availability and our needs.
  • Support and guidance from our team, including around consent, privacy and ethical storytelling.

Commitment

  • Flexible, ideally for a minimum of three to six months.
  • Around 2–4 hours per week.
  • Work from home or from our Wellington CBD office.
  • Willingness to meet regularly with the Chief Executive and/or Programme Support, online or in person.
  • Ability to complete NZ Police Vetting.
