Are you financially savvy and passionate about making a difference in your community?

Volunteer Nelson is seeking a Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees. This is a key volunteer governance role where your financial knowledge and experience will directly contribute to the financial sustainability, good governance and future direction of our organisation.

The Role

As Treasurer, you will provide financial oversight and guidance to the Board, working closely with the Chair and Organisation Manager to ensure Volunteer Nelson remains financially sustainable, well governed and accountable.

You will help the Board understand our financial position, identify risks and opportunities, and make informed decisions about the organisation's future.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who:

  • Has experience in finance, accounting, treasury or a related field
  • Is confident with budgeting, financial reporting and financial oversight
  • Can interpret financial information and translate numbers into clear insights for the Board
  • Understands, or is interested in, non-profit governance and financial compliance
  • Is a strong communicator and collaborative team member
  • Is committed to Volunteer Nelson's purpose and values

Preferred experience:

  • A background in accounting, finance or a related discipline
  • Previous governance or Board experience
  • Familiarity with Xero and Microsoft 365

What You'll Do

As Treasurer, you will:

  • Provide financial oversight and reporting to the Board
  • Work with the Organisation Manager and Board on annual budgets and financial planning
  • Monitor and report on financial performance, risks and trends
  • Support grant reporting and fundraising budgets
  • Oversee financial compliance and assist with audit processes
  • Provide oversight of banking and financial controls
  • Contribute to strategic planning, risk management and broader governance discussions

Time Commitment

Volunteer Nelson Trustees meet monthly on a Thursday, from 5–7pm, with additional involvement in strategic planning, occasional working groups or sub-committees, and organisational events.

The Treasurer has a greater level of involvement than a general Trustee, including reviewing financial information between meetings and working with the Chair and Organisation Manager on financial matters.

Why Volunteer Nelson?

Volunteer Nelson is a community-focused non-profit organisation supporting volunteering and strengthening connections across the Nelson Tasman region.

As Treasurer, you'll join an engaged, values-led Board and have the opportunity to use your financial expertise to make a practical contribution to our community while helping shape the future direction and sustainability of the organisation.

If you're looking for a meaningful way to use your financial skills and contribute to your community, we'd love to hear from you.
