Face to Face Literacy Coach-Napier/Hastings

Become a Literacy Coach with the Rural Youth and Adult Literacy Trust (RYALT)!

• Are you passionate about literacy and making a positive impact in your community? Look no further!  Our volunteer literacy coaches are the core of our organisation.
• Students vary from people learning the alphabet to those wanting to write essays, but most are somewhere in between.
• They don’t have the skills they need for everyday life.
• Our students range in age from 13 to 65 and are from all walks of life.
• We ask for your preferences about the kind of person you would be comfortable working with. Your enthusiasm, patience, and commitment are what matter most.
• Volunteers for this role will be teaching the basics of reading and writing.
• You will be working one to one with a student, in a public area such as the library.
• Offer up to 2 hours a week
• Attend professional development workshops online.
• The main qualities you need are:  be friendly, patient, love helping others, and have an analytical mind. Our training and support covers the rest.
• You will need moderate technology skills. You will be required to download and use our messaging app, Slack, for communication and our wiki library of resources.
• We have tech support people who can help you learn to use these tools, if you are not confident. Using them is an essential part of the role.

What We're Looking For

This role requires long-term commitment (a minimum of a year) and a fair bit of your time. However, it can be flexible. It also very rewarding.
