Role Description

If you want a rewarding experience where you can gain new skills, foster a positive and inclusive local community, and meet new people, join us as a refugee support volunteer.

Refugee support volunteers work in teams to support former refugees as they embark on their resettlement journey. Teams are decided upon volunteer availability. We also try to match people with complementary skills.

Your Tasks

You’ll be helping people navigate life in a new country, which might include

  • Helping set up a home for a family, couples or an individual
  • Helping with grocery shopping and finding local markets and specialty stores.
  • Helping navigate the city, including using public transport.
  • Connecting people with local services, community events and activities.
  • Learning about another culture and sharing your own.  
  • Being friendly, welcoming and supportive.

  

Volunteer Requirements and Training

Training takes approximately 8 hours and is delivered over several sessions.

Please complete our online form to register for training. This will take a few minutes to fill out.

Training dates:

Two training sessions:

Saturday and Sunday 10th and 11th October

OR

Wednesday and Thursday 4th and 5th November

Volunteer training will take place in the First Aid Training Room at the Red Cross Service Centre, 245 Main St, Palmerston North. You need to attend both days.
