Whakatu Riding for Disabled - support for horse riders
Whakatu Group Riding for the Disabled Incorporated supported by Volunteer Nelson
To be part of the team supporting each rider. Each team is under the guidance of a coach.
The horse leader guides and controls the horse.
Side walkers support the riders to sit safely on the horse and to follow the coaches instructions
The role involves general helping around the horse yards, ensuring horses have hay and water, cleaning up, grooming horses, tacking up etc
You need reasonable fitness to walk alongside the horse and rider for 45 minutes
A willingness to support people with varied challenges which may be intellectual, physical, emotional or social
Non judgemental and patient
Positive attitude
Interest in horses and if not experienced, keen to learn
There is a lot of support at the Whakatu RDA and you will be part of a caring team helping people to participate in their riding programmes
