Kai Rescue Volunteer

Nelson Environment Centre supported by Volunteer Nelson

Logo for Nelson Environment Centre

The Nelson Environment Centre needs a volunteers to join the Kai Rescue team in their effort to rescue food that would otherwise go to landfill, and redistribute it to over 60 Nelson charities. You will be available on a weekday morning (currently we need people on Wednesdays and Fridays, and then Tuesdays from end of March) from 8.30 am to 12 pm .

The team of volunteers collect, sort and pack the rescued food from supermarkets, manufacturers and growers. They share the kai with many groups in the Nelson region that are running support services to help those in our community that are struggling to afford food. Your role would be to coordinate and support this team.

We offer a friendly environment, reasonably central location and real coffee! .This is an opportunity to have a real impact and feel more connected in the local community. You must be 16 years of age or older to volunteer.

We have a few opportunities available at Kai Rescue:

  • Monday general packing of kai boxes (approx 8.30 - 1pm)
  • Monday pantry box (11.30 - 1pm)
  • Tuesday pantry box (11.30 - 1 pm)
  • Wednesday general packing (approx 8.30 - 1 pm)
  • Thursday collections (approx 7 - 10.30 am)
  • Friday general packing (approx. 8.30 - 1 pm) - from 1st November until mid-January
  • Backup collections - any weekday around 7 am - 11 am (depending on the day) - this would be when our regular volunteers are not available.

We look forward to hearing from you!
