Dementia Activity Group Volunteer - Omokoroa
Dementia Tauranga supported by Volunteering Services (BOP)

Help make group days something to look forward to
Dementia Tauranga runs friendly activity and social groups for people living with dementia across Tauranga and the Western Bay of Plenty. Each session gives members company, fun and a sense of belonging, and gives their family carers a well-earned break.
We are looking for volunteers who can commit to one regular session and become a familiar face in the room.
What you'll be doing
- Helping set up before the session and pack down at the end
- Joining in with the activity alongside members - music, quizzes, games, conversation and more
- Supporting members to take part in their own way and at their own pace
- Working alongside our facilitator and following the group's routines
Why consistency matters
Our groups depend on safe numbers. When a volunteer doesn't turn up without notice, it affects supervision, personal care support and the attention each person gets. People living with dementia notice changes in the room and in familiar faces. Consistency is part of the care we offer, not an extra.
What we ask of you
- Commit to a regular session and give notice when you are unavailable
- Arrive on time to help with set-up and stay through pack-down
- Be patient, calm, and comfortable with repetition and changes in mood
- Join in with the activity alongside members, rather than observe
- Follow direction from the facilitator and respect group routines
- Treat members with dignity and see the person first
- Keep information confidential
- Be open to dementia awareness training
What you'll get
- Free dementia awareness training and ongoing support
- A friendly team and a facilitator in every session
- Real skills in communication and dementia care - great for anyone studying or working in health, aged care or social services
- The knowledge that you are making a real difference to local families
No experience is needed. A police check is required, and we arrange it for you.
What happens next
Apply here and you'll receive a link to our short registration form. Once we have it, we'll be in touch within a few working days to book a short interview at our office on Thirteenth Avenue. Our activity coordinator joins the end of the interview to talk about which group suits you best and what the commitment looks like.
