Short Summary: Passionate about sustainability and community building? Lead our monthly Te Atatū South Repair Café, reduce waste, and bring people together—just 8 hours a month!
About the Role: Te Atatū South Repair Café is seeking a community-minded Volunteer & Event Coordinator to lead our vibrant monthly events. If you want to keep treasured household items out of landfills while fostering a warm, connected community in West Auckland, this role is for you!
Supported by a wider team of leaders under the Doughnut Economics Advocates NZ (DEANZ) charity, you’ll oversee the smooth running of our monthly repair sessions and support our skilled volunteers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Event Leadership & Operations: Oversee venue setup, run-of-show, visitor flow, and pack-down for monthly repair sessions on the first Friday evening of each month.
- Volunteer Coordination & Roster Management: Check volunteer availability 1–2 weeks prior to each session and coordinate roster coverage across key repair stations (sewing, electrical, bikes, general, and reception).
- Community & Visitor Hospitality: Create a warm, inclusive environment, welcome visitors, brief reception volunteers, and manage visitor queues smoothly.
- Health, Safety & Venue Standards: Ensure basic health and safety practices are followed during sessions, including overseeing electrical safety check protocols.
- Post-Event Reporting & Admin: Tally monthly repair metrics (items fixed, unresolved, visitor numbers) and share a brief summary report with the team on Slack.
- Financial Care & Logistics: Handle monthly Koha (donations) collection/banking, manage simple receipt reimbursements, and ensure event supplies and volunteer refreshments are stocked.
- Storytelling & Advocacy (Optional): Help capture success stories and photos during events to share with our media team and act as an approachable advocate for DEANZ and the repair movement.
What We’re Looking For:
- A passion for sustainability, zero-waste, and circular economy principles.
- Strong organisational skills and reliability.
- Great interpersonal skills—someone who loves connecting with people and making them feel valued.
- Comfort with (or willingness to learn) basic digital communication tools.
- Time Commitment: Approx. 8 hours per month.
What You’ll Gain:
- Full Onboarding Support: A smooth handover and ongoing backing from our outgoing coordinator and wider leadership team.
- Leadership & Event Experience: Proven community management and event coordination experience within a recognised sustainability charity.
- Impact & Network: Strong connections with a passionate local network of fixers, environmentalists, and community advocates in West Auckland.
- Professional Tech Skills: Practical experience using popular industry tools (Google Workspace, Slack, Facebook/Meta Suite, WhatsApp)—a fantastic boost for your CV and career.
