Pest line trappers

We're looking for some keen volunteers to help with trapping invasive rats and possums around Rosebank Peninsula, to protect the wildlife in the nearby marine reserve. Don't worry if you've never done this before - full training will be provided. Our goal is to achieve 'Pest-free Whau' by 2050. To help us reach this target, we need volunteers to check and reset traps with new bait at least monthly. We do not use any poisons. Each volunteer will be fully trained on how to check and reset the traps safely. The hours will depend entirely on what you are able to commit to. Location is on the Rosebank Peninsula, alongside the Rosebank Industrial area, normally we can only monitor during business working hours. However, some sections are accessible on the weekend, we also have trapping projects at Tony Segedin Reserve which can be checked on weekdays and weekends. If this sounds like something you'd be keen to help out with, we'd love to hear from you!
Organisational Background
The Whau River Catchment Trust (WRCT) is a community environmental organisation working to restore and protect the Whau River and its surrounding ecosystems. We work with volunteers and the community on pest control, planting, biodiversity monitoring, freshwater monitoring, and environmental education.
Benefits of Volunteering
Gain hands-on conservation experience, learn practical pest trapping and monitoring skills, meet like-minded people, and contribute to local environmental restoration.
Impact of the Opportunity
Your efforts will help reduce pest numbers, protect native wildlife and vegetation, and**** support biodiversity across the Rosebank Peninsula and wider Whau River catchment. Regular trap checking and maintenance are essential to keeping the pest control programme effective.
