Flare Ōtautahi Street Art Festival managed by Volunteering Canterbury

Urban Art Central is FLARE’s volunteer and artist-led gallery and shop in central Christchurch. The gallery showcases original artworks, prints, merchandise, sculptures, books and zines from local urban and street artists.

Gallery Assistants are responsible for running the space during their allocated shift. This is generally a solo role, so volunteers need to be comfortable working independently once they have completed their induction and training.

The role includes:

  • Opening or closing the gallery, depending on the shift
  • Welcoming visitors and creating a friendly, inclusive environment
  • Sharing general information about FLARE, the gallery, artists and artworks
  • Processing EFTPOS and cash sales
  • Recording sales clearly and accurately
  • Keeping a tally of visitor numbers
  • Checking artwork prices and artist price lists when needed
  • Keeping the gallery clean, tidy and presentable
  • Answering basic visitor questions or contacting the FLARE team when unsure
  • Monitoring the space and following the gallery’s safety procedures
  • Completing the end-of-shift handover and reporting any sales, issues or important information
  • At closing, counting and recording the cash total, turning off the required lights, securing the gallery and plugging in the gallery phone, EFTPOS machine and speaker

Volunteers receive an induction and a written FLARE Shift Guide before completing a solo shift. Support is available through our volunteer group chat, and a member of the FLARE team can be contacted if any questions or issues arise.

No previous gallery or retail experience is required. We are looking for someone who is friendly, reliable, honest, comfortable speaking with the public and able to follow straightforward procedures. An interest in art, street art or creative communities is helpful.

This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a gallery environment, meet local artists, learn about exhibition and retail operations, and become part of Christchurch’s urban art community.

Gallery shifts are generally:

  • Morning shift: 10am to 2pm
  • Afternoon shift: 2pm to 5.30pm

We welcome people interested in regular weekly or monthly shifts, as well as volunteers who can provide occasional cover.
