Logo for Nelson Environment Centre

Consider yourself a bit of a scrapper or E Waste Warrior?

We're looking for a hands-on volunteer that enjoys manual labour and making a positive impact on the environment & for the community.

You will be sorting and scrapping mixed metal into specific categories such as Copper, Brass & Aluminium.

You may also like to help break down old electrical equipment, as well as scrapping!

You will need to be comfortable with basic hand tools to strip down copper wiring & separate mixed metals.

You are:

  • at least 16 years of age
  • comfortable to lift up to 20 kgs.
  • have a mature approach with an ability to think on your feet;
  • able to follow safety procedures;
  • happy to be part of a team but able to work independently
  • be well-organised and able to maintain a tidy work space.

Various hours are available seven days a week from 8.30 am - 4.30 pm. Regular hours are preferred but we can also consider your availability.

Ideally, you would be able to commit to a regular shift for a month. This opportunity is not suitable for short-term volunteers.

Not sure? Read this testimonial from one of our awesome volunteers:
"The E-waste team always needs help disassembling broken electronics!
So I decided to do some volunteering there. I really enjoy helping the team.
Going through a chaotic pile of computers and appliances and turning it into organised components is strangely satisfying.
It's especially good knowing you've diverted a lot of valuable resources from landfill, and helped raise money to feed those in need.
I'd really recommend volunteering there if you don't mind getting your hands dirty!"

-Dillon, volunteer.

We look forward to hearing from you if you think this would be a good match for you!

This work directly supports Kai Rescue & The Nelson Environment Centre by increasing the value of our recycled metals.

Ideally, you will have your own safety boots, but we do have some second-hand ones available to borrow - we just need to check your size! Other safety equipment provided.

We look forward to hearing from you!
