Te Whai Community Trust is a community organisation based in Mangawhai, delivering services and programmes that strengthen wellbeing and belonging across the district. The Trust is funded through grants, donations, contracts and community partnerships, and the Board is responsible for the stewardship of those funds.

Mangawhai is among the fastest-growing communities in New Zealand, and the Board is focused on ensuring the Trust's finances, structure and services keep pace with that growth.

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About the role

The Treasurer is a full trustee, carrying the same duties as every other member of the Board, with additional responsibility for leading the Board's financial oversight. Day to day finance and accounting is carried out by our external accountant. The Treasurer's contribution is governance: interpreting financial information for the Board, testing the assumptions behind it and holding the Trust's financial position to account.

  • Leading the Board's oversight of financial performance, cash flow and reserves
  • Working with the Services Manager, Partnerships Manager and accountant so that Board reporting is accurate, timely and fit for governance purposes
  • Guiding the Board through the annual budget and monitoring performance against it
  • Ensuring statutory obligations are met, including Charities Services filings and the annual return
  • Overseeing the annual financial statements and audit and review processes
  • Overseeing the annual insurance renewal and satisfying the Board that cover remains adequate for the Trust's activities, assets and liabilities
  • Advising the Board on financial sustainability, reserves and funding risk

Ko wai koe | About you

  • A finance background in chartered accountancy, audit, banking or senior commercial finance. A CA qualification is preferred but not essential
  • Confidence interpreting and explaining financial statements
  • Previous Board experience, and/or clear understanding of the boundary between governance and management
  • An understanding of the funding realities of the not-for-profit and charitable sector
  • Charitable sector reporting experience and familiarity with grant and contract accounting would be an advantage
  • Sound judgement and the ability to contribute to strategic, future-focused Board discussion
  • A strong commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, our values, and to the Mangawhai community

Commitment required

Monthly Board meetings, currently the fourth Monday of the month, 9am to 11am in Mangawhai, with preparation time before each meeting and occasional finance work between meetings. The total commitment is estimated at around 6 hours per month.

The position is voluntary and unremunerated. Reasonable expenses are reimbursed. Trustees must meet the fit and proper person requirements of the Charities Act 2005, and undergo police vetting.
