Communications Specialist

The Wise Response Society is looking for a Communications Specialists to find and create opportunities to get our core message into public discourse at the local and national levels.

 

Core tasks

  • Drafts and issues media releases and reactive commentary under committee direction, at news-cycle speed
  • Maintains the Substack, the website and the media contact list, and reports on reach
  • Tracks submission deadlines and coordinates our responses

Person

  • Strong, fast, plain writer, comfortable translating technical material for a general audience
  • Comfortable with the limits to growth framing and not looking to soften it into green growth
  • Self-directing on execution, entirely committee-directed on line and position
  • Existing relationships with NZ media desks would be a significant advantage
  • Social Media skills highly desirable

Experience

  • Communication position in an organization/environmental advocacy
  • Journalism: focus on science, public policy, social change
  • Social Media content and design

Terms

  • Willing to start as a volunteer; WR to seek at least partial funding for position
  • Roughly 15 to 20 hours a month, contractor rather than employee, six-month initial term
  • Reports to one named committee liaison, not to the committee as a body
  • Committee retains sign-off on every published word for an initial trial period
