Communications Specialist
The Wise Response Society is looking for a Communications Specialists to find and create opportunities to get our core message into public discourse at the local and national levels.
Core tasks
- Drafts and issues media releases and reactive commentary under committee direction, at news-cycle speed
- Maintains the Substack, the website and the media contact list, and reports on reach
- Tracks submission deadlines and coordinates our responses
Person
- Strong, fast, plain writer, comfortable translating technical material for a general audience
- Comfortable with the limits to growth framing and not looking to soften it into green growth
- Self-directing on execution, entirely committee-directed on line and position
- Existing relationships with NZ media desks would be a significant advantage
- Social Media skills highly desirable
Experience
- Communication position in an organization/environmental advocacy
- Journalism: focus on science, public policy, social change
- Social Media content and design
Terms
- Willing to start as a volunteer; WR to seek at least partial funding for position
- Roughly 15 to 20 hours a month, contractor rather than employee, six-month initial term
- Reports to one named committee liaison, not to the committee as a body
- Committee retains sign-off on every published word for an initial trial period
