Second Hand Clothing Volunteer
Whareora House of Life Trust is looking for a local, friendly, reliable volunteer to join our Whareora Preloved Boutique on Fridays, fortnightly or monthly, from 10am to 1pm. You will work alongside our wonderful volunteer Nina to help keep the shop running and provide a welcoming experience for our customers.
About Whareora House of Life Trust
Whareora House of Life Trust is a community-based charitable trust in Christchurch. Our community house provides a welcoming place where people can connect, participate in activities, build friendships, and access practical support.
Our Preloved Clothing Boutique helps contribute to the sustainability of our community house while providing affordable second-hand clothing and goods to the local community. We have a wonderful team of around 40 volunteers who help make our activities and services possible.
Key duties
As a shop volunteer, you will help with:
- Welcoming customers and providing friendly customer service
- Operating the shop and handling cash/EFTPOS transactions
- Sorting, pricing, and displaying donated clothing and other items
- Keeping clothing racks and displays tidy and organised
- Keeping the shop clean, presentable, and welcoming
- Helping restock and rotate items on the shop floor
- Answering basic customer questions
- Working alongside Nina and other volunteers as part of our team
- Supporting the smooth day-to-day running of the boutique
Skills and experience
You don't need previous retail experience. We are looking for someone who is:
- Friendly, approachable, and enjoys meeting people
- Reliable and able to commit to a regular Friday shift
- Comfortable talking with customers
- Honest and trustworthy
- Happy to work as part of a small team
- Interested in second-hand shopping, clothing, or helping their local community
Retail, customer service, or cash-handling experience would be helpful but is not essential. We are happy to show you the ropes.

Your time will make a real difference. Our volunteers contribute more than 3,000 hours each year, helping us provide activities, events, transport, community connection, and support for around 300 people annually who attend our programmes.
By volunteering in the shop, you will help us keep our boutique operating, generate income that supports our community work, and provide an affordable and welcoming shopping experience for local people. Just three hours of your time on a Friday can make a genuine difference.
