Job summary:

The Phone Coordinator is the first point of contact for members of the public reporting ill, injured, or juvenile birds. This role involves answering incoming calls, gathering key information, and providing clear, compassionate guidance on the appropriate next steps. Volunteers will advise callers on safely transporting birds to the hospital when necessary or refer them to a more suitable facility based on location, species, or situation.

This is a shared role, with responsibilities shared among a team of 3 volunteers (hours to be determined, min. 3 days per week). Although remote friendly, applicants need to be based in Christchurch as this role requires occasional visits to the clinic and a good working knowledge of the locality.

Key responsibilities:

• Answer incoming calls promptly, professionally, and record details accurately.

• Collect key details about the bird’s condition, location, and situation.

• Provide clear and accurate advice on how to safely bring birds to the hospital.

• Redirect callers to other facilities or agencies when appropriate.

• Communicate with hospital staff to prepare for incoming patients when needed.

Skills & qualifications:

• A good understanding of NZ native bird species and wildlife handling protocols.

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

• Calm, compassionate approach when speaking with distressed callers.

• Ability to assess situations and offer appropriate advice quickly.

• Comfortable using simple call logs or digital systems for record-keeping.

• Reliability and a collaborative attitude, as part of a small volunteer team.

• This role may suit someone with a zoological, medical, or veterinary background.
