Volunteer Opportunity: Help ANZMES Strengthen ME/CFS Awareness & Science Communication

ANZMES is looking for two new volunteers to join our small, dedicated communications team. If you care about accurate ME/CFS information, enjoy writing, or like keeping an eye on what’s happening in the media, one of these roles might be a great fit.

These roles are light, flexible, and can be done from home, and you’re welcome to express interest in one or both.

Science Writer

Approx. 3–4 hours per month

Each month, ANZMES publishes a “Research Roundup” summarising new ME/CFS research in clear, accessible language. We’re looking for someone who enjoys reading science and translating it into plain English. You’ll:

  • Review 3–6 new ME/CFS‑relevant studies each month
  • Write short, layperson‑friendly summaries
  • Highlight why the research matters and what’s still unknown
  • Work with our Communications Team for review
  • Provide key points to our Content Creator for graphics

This role suits someone who enjoys science communication, health writing, or simply has a curious mind and strong writing skills.

Media Monitor

Approx. 1–1.5 hours per fortnight

Our “Making Headlines” updates help the community stay informed about ME/CFS in the news. We’re looking for someone who can keep an eye on media coverage and pick out what’s relevant.

You’ll:

  • Monitor Google Alerts and trusted sources
  • Identify NZ and international ME/CFS stories
  • Write 1–2 sentence summaries with links
  • Flag misinformation or problematic framing
  • Work with our Communications Team for review
  • Share items with our Content Creator for potential graphics

This role suits someone who enjoys staying up‑to‑date, spotting key points quickly, and writing short summaries.

What Both Roles Have in Common

  • Flexible, home‑based volunteering
  • Supportive oversight from our Communications Team
  • Clear guidelines, including our Editorial Policy and Terminology Guidelines
  • A chance to contribute meaningfully to ME/CFS awareness and advocacy
  • Work that directly supports people living with ME/CFS across Aotearoa

Interested?

We’d love to hear from you. Please tell us:

  • Which role you’re interested in (or both)
  • A little about your background
  • Why the role appeals to you

Formal qualifications are not mandatory if you can demonstrate your reliability, good writing skills, and a commitment to accurate, respectful communication.
