TechMate managed by Volunteering Canterbury

TechMate is a volunteer powered charity dedicated to closing the digital divide.

We support people across Christchurch with free digital skills coaching, tech support, access to repurposed laptops through Recycle a Device, and internet through the Skinny Jump programme.

Our volunteers help everyone, from seniors to job seekers, to connect and thrive in the digital world. We are open to all, fostering a stronger, more connected community.

As a digital coach you will be helping to support members of the public navigate this increasingly digital world through one-on-one learning and support sessions.

You do not need to be a technical whizz but use devices in your everyday life and be prepared to share your knowledge with others.

We offer our services through community drop-in sessions, these are usually weekly running for 2 hours. We will do some training at our main office, but once you are settled in you will be set up at a drop-in session alongside another of our volunteers.

Key Qualities:

  • Patient and a good listener

  • Able to communicate clearly and without the use of a lot of tech jargon

  • Comfortable working with people from diverse backgrounds

  • Confident with the basics of using devices for essential daily use (online banking, emails, texting)
