Logo for Volunteering Canterbury

Role; 5 Kidsfirst Kindergartens are part of the KidsCan initiative. As such they have food provided for children each day which needs simple preparation and cooking. A volunteer taking on this role will enable kaiako to continue teaching through the day, while this preparation and cooking is taking place. The role includes;

  1. Some clean up after morning tea.
  2. Final preparation and cooking of food for the day.
  3. May include serving lunch to children – flexible and agreed with the teaching team.
  4. Clean up after lunch.
  5. Some preparation for the following day. Requirements;
  • Ability to follow instructions.
  • Experience in food preparation would be an advantage but not a requirement.
  • Flexibility – these are young children so sometimes the routine may change depending on the needs of the day.
  • Experience in working with children under the age of 6 would be an advantage.
  • Regular liaison with the Head Teacher regarding menu and supplies.
  • Some work with KidsCan regarding ongoing food safety requirements.
  • Working with the Head Teacher and the teaching team regarding daily work and forward planning.

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment; Weekdays. Approximately 2 hours per day (approximately 11.30am-1.30pm – negotiated with the teaching team at the kindergarten), during term time. There are 3 kindergartens who need support with Kidscan so this role could be in one of three areas of Christchurch to best suit the successfully police vetted applicant. More than one person could complete this volunteering through the week at each kindergarten. We would appreciate applicants who could commit to at least one term of volunteering in this position.
