Volunteer Role: Garden Support/Coordinator/kaitiaki Sister Eveleen Retreat House – Sumner Sister Eveleen Retreat House is a small retreat house overlooking Pegasus Bay in Sumner, Christchurch. Our garden are an essential part of the welcome we offer — a place of beauty, quiet, and restoration. We are seeking a Garden Kaitiaki (Steward and Coordinator) — someone with a genuine love for gardens who would enjoy caring for and gently overseeing this special outdoor space. Kaitiaki is a Māori word often translated as guardian or steward: someone who cares for a place with attentiveness, respect, and a sense of responsibility for its wellbeing over time. The Role The Garden Kaitiaki would help to tend and guide the ongoing care of the gardens so they remain inviting and well-loved throughout the seasons. You might: Spend regular time gardening and caring for plants and outdoor areas
Notice seasonal needs and help shape simple garden priorities
Help to coordinate occasional volunteer working bees
Contribute ideas that support the garden as a peaceful and welcoming environment
We are looking for someone who: Has a love for gardens and outdoor spaces
Enjoys taking gentle initiative
Has practical gardening experience (formal training not required)
Appreciates calm and reflective environments
