Youth Mentor

Are you keen to make a real difference in the life of a child in your community - just by being yourself?

Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Canterbury is looking for caring, reliable adults to become Youth Mentors, supporting tamariki aged 6–11.

As a Youth Mentor, you’ll be professionally matched with a child and spend one hour a week together, building a positive, trusting relationship through simple, everyday activities.

Mentoring may take place in the community (after school or weekends), or at school during term time.

Activities are low-key, fun and easy - walking the dog, baking, playing sports, crafting, tinkering in the shed or garden, playing board games, or just hanging out and talking. There’s no pressure to plan big outings or spend money. What matters most is showing up, being consistent and having fun together.

You won’t do it alone. Our experienced Mentoring Coordinators are with you every step of the way, providing full training before you start, ongoing guidance and check-ins, and lots of activity ideas and resources.

You’ll also have the option to join our legendary match events - group gatherings where Bigs and Littles come together to try new activities, make friends and create lasting memories. Think cosy movie nights in the winter, or kayaking and picnics in the summer.

This role is open to people from all walks of life - working professionals, retirees, empty nesters, child-free adults, students and more. You don’t need special skills or experience. Just a little time and a big heart.

To apply, you must be 18 years or older, live in North Canterbury (this excludes Christchurch) and can commit to one hour a week for at least one year.

The application process usually takes 6–8 weeks and begins with a no-obligation, informal information session at our bright and welcoming office in Rangiora.
