Historical Maritime Vessel Restoration Volunteer
Kaipuke Kaiapoi Heritage Trust managed by Volunteering Canterbury
The project is being undertaken to restore the historical scow Success to as close as possible to its original construction 100 years ago. The scow once visited the port of Kaiapoi transporting a range of cargo. The scow is presently located on a site in the Corcoran Reserve, Charles Street, Kaiapoi.
Present work being completed is to strip off any non original timbers and fittings, to remove water and silt from the bilges and to remove other fittings which will be reused. This work has been progressing with the Trustees and a small number of Volunteers. The project has moved to a phase where a larger base of Volunteers needs to be built up to ensure enough resource is available to assist with the installation of new structural timbers and replacement and repair of the hull timbers.
There is presently a project advancing to install foundations and erect a container shed structure to protect the vessel from rain and sun, also to allow works to advance during inclement conditions.
The present planned duration for this restoration project is 3 - 5 years.
