Sports Mentor for young people
Hoa Motuhake Sports Trust is a sports mentoring and scholarship program for at-risk and disadvantaged children (8-12yrs). Guiding them towards better well-being and building confidence to engage in community sports. At Hoa Motuhake Sports Trust, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to participate in sports, regardless of their circumstances. Our trust was founded to ensure that children from disadvantaged communities have equal access to physical activities and the support of a caring mentor. Through weekly one-on-one sessions and group activities, we provide a positive, encouraging environment where kids can grow, learn, and thrive both on and off the field. The mentoring program runs for one year where tamariki are matched with a sports mentor to engage in sport. Once that year is up, mentors step away and tamariki graduate into our scholarship program where they are supported for the next 4 years. Here we continually breakdown barriers so tamariki can continue to engage in community sport. Barriers such as cost, equipment, and transport.
Key Duties:
- Weekly Mentoring Sessions: Catching up with your child once a week following school term times (x4 blocks of 10 weeks). The sessions focus on physical activity and sport. Be a positive role model in their life and encourage their growth both physically and emotionally.
- Support in Sport Participation: Assist children in attending their sports sessions through providing transport and building their confidence.
- Encourage, Participation, and Teamwork: Promote positive values of sport and be a positive role model in their life, encouraging growth both physically and emotionally.
- Regular Feedback: Provide updates on the child's progress and any concerns to the trust coordinators.
- Attend Group Events: Participate in fortnightly group sessions where all mentors and children come together to participate in a sport facilitated by us. Allowing children the opportunity to socialise with other children and for mentors to meet other mentors.
Skills and Experience Needed: There are no true set of skills or experience needed for being a Sports Mentor. We have a wide range of mentors but the one thing they all have in common is sharing a passion for supporting the next generation. We have all felt the benefits of sport and being able to give back so a disadvantaged child can face those same benefits is our why.
Benefits of Volunteering with Us:
- Make a real difference: Your involvement directly impacts a child's life, helping them build confidence, reilience, and social connections through sport.
- Personal Fulfilment: The bonds you'll form with your mentee will provide a very rewarding experience as you watch them develop and grow each week.
- Community Connections: Be a part of a positive and caring community of volunteers, children, and families. Flexible schedule: Whole the commitment is weekly (during school terms), the mentoring can be worked into your schedule. E.g. After school on a weekday, morning of a weekend etc.
Impact of Volunteering: Your role as a mentor will create lasting change in the life of a child who needs support. Not only will you help them build the skills and confidence to participate in sport, but you’ll also foster a sense of belonging and stability in their lives. All of the children in our trust come from backgrounds where access to sport is limited, and your involvement ensures they have the opportunity to engage and succeed.
