Mission: To facilitate a health and wellbeing community where queer, gender diverse, and takataapui folk can find holistic wellness, community and turangawaewae through joyful exercise and social experiences.

Purpose of the role

These roles will assist Radiqal Movement in the organisation and delivery of the Mermascs group and activities.

Mermascs is a social sea swimming and beach trip group. Mermasc meetups encourage social interaction, community-building, and body-confidence whilst connecting with wai and taiao. It’s more about spending time in the water than it is about swimming laps. It’s open to all people, with a focus on queer people and all communities that are typically excluded from mainstream fitness spaces

Key Tasks & responsibilities

  • Manage the Mermascs group chat, promoting and reminding members of upcoming activities
  • Proactively seek out new members to add to the group chat
  • Organise 1-2 Mermascs meetups per fortnight, considering tidal times, Safeswim updates, variety of locations and ease of access to beach locations
  • Confirm planned location and time/date of swim with Chief Executive at least 1 week in advance, ensuring there is no clash with other Radiqal activities
  • Ask chat members to confirm if they plan to attend within 1 day prior to an activity, and check this as attendees arrive
  • Attend all Mermascs activities (1-2 per fortnight)
  • Check that attendees have water and sun protection, or that they are choosing to proceed without these
  • Be welcoming to attendees and encourage group participation
  • Take at least 1 photo of attendees during each activity (with their explicit consent that it can be shared on Radiqal social media)
  • Update the Chief Executive after each activity

You will be supplied with a backpack, first aid kit, and sunblock.

Personal requirements

Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to use Facebook messenger & Instagram
  • Confidence and competence as a swimmer
  • Basic understanding of the wellbeing benefits of swimming and spending time in taiao
  • Effective communication and time-management skills
  • Ability to work unsupervised
