URGENT: Our Disaster Welfare Support Team (DWST) based in Whangarei has a maximum of 20 team members. We are urgently looking to grow our numbers to make sure the team is full at all times.

You will mostly train and respond to emergencies in your local area but may travel throughout New Zealand supporting other Red Cross teams when needed. Team members train regularly, usually every fortnight. Our response teams are trained in a variety of skills, from first aid to ground-based rescue, which benefit both themselves and the New Zealand community.

Key Duties You could be deployed to assist in a flood, fire or other large-scale emergencies, and you’ll help with a range of activities that could include:

  • Setting up and providing support in evacuation centers
  • Undertaking needs assessments to understand what support people need
  • Providing psychosocial support

Volunteer requirements for DWST

  • 16+ Years Old
  • Physically fit
  • A good communicator
  • Able to commit to your team for at least 12 months
  • Able to pass New Zealand Police Check (support Services Child/youth)
  • Able to provide 2 referees for character check
