VISITOR EXPERIENCE VOLUNTEERS CONTRIBUTE TO: • Ensuring that visitors are made welcome • Ensuring that visitors have a positive experience of Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne during their visit • Inspiring visitors to support Zealandia • Promoting a passion for conservation and restoration to visitors • The regular use of te reo Māori in Aotearoa New Zealand DUTIES • Arriving on time and liaising with other volunteers to manage the tasks of the day • Carry out the allocated specified activities of the day, e.g. placing out mini talk signs, delivering mini talks, roving. These activities may vary from time to time depending on changing operational needs • Interact with visitors to answer their queries and point out native plants and animals, especially those likely to be of interest such as tuatara, kākā and takahē, as well as less commonly sighted species such as hihi, pāteke, and titipounamu • Sharing knowledge with visitors about spots within the sanctuary to visit, like the suspension ridge, dams, viewing tower, etc. • Let visitors know about other Zealandia activities such as boat rides, other mini talks, night tours and seasonal programmes and events • Observe the wildlife and report to staff anything of interest or concern • Complete any feedback forms required • Comply with Zealandia’s Health and Safety policies and follow instructions of staff in the event of any emergency

Volunteers\Skippers Guides & Hosts\Position Descriptions\Visitor Experience Volunteers July 2021 COMPETENCIES • Strong oral communication skills • Enthusiastic • Respectful • Punctual and reliable • Excellent perception and responsiveness to the needs of diverse visitors • Moderate level of fitness i.e. be on feet for three to four hours and walk approximately five kilometres on the main valley tracks • Good observation skills • Commitment to conservation • Some knowledge of native animals (especially birds) and plant species or a willingness to learn • Work unsupervised and apply initiative if confronted with a difficult situation EXPECTATIONS Visitor Experience Volunteers are expected to: • Be familiar with the content of the Visitor Experience website knowledge base • Use Māori greetings, names for flora and fauna, and learn correct pronunciation • Have electronic access to emails and central information resources held at Zealandia • Keep up-to-date by attending training sessions, seminars and reading communication bulletins and updated resources • Welcome new volunteers and support them in their roles • Be flexible and willing to adapt to Zealandia’s changing operational needs • Dress appropriately for the role and the weather, wearing Zealandia uniform items and name badge as required • Use the radio communication system following Zealandia guidelines • Be available for a minimum of two shifts per month • Participate in any assessment or evaluation activities as may be carried out from time to time • Keep Events and Programming Coordinator aware of any long or foreseeable absences from shifts (Eg: upcoming medical treatment or overseas travel) and inform Visitors Centre if you very suddenly can’t attend that days shift • Be an example for visitors in how to interact with fauna and flora in the valley (Eg: keeping distance, no feeding or touching wildlife, keeping on tracks, no taking leaves, berries, feathers, etc from the valley).
