ABOUT WRT Waiheke Resources Trust (WRT) is a well-established sustainability-focussed Charitable Trust which operates on the beautiful Te Motu Arai Roa | Waiheke Island in Tīkapa Moana | Hauraki Gulf.

We seek to create transformational change through community collaboration and development, working to celebrate and protect the resources of the island | motu. WRT celebrates and protects all the resources we have, and builds capacity and knowledge in the community toward the creation of a resource-full future for all.

WRT works to support thriving environments and communities by engaging, educating and supporting people in environmental restoration, food resilience and waste minimisation. We collaborate with volunteers, interns, local business, national and regional networks, iwi, government bodies, subject experts and Waiheke whānau to get the job done.

We believe that when environments are healthy and communities are connected, people and wildlife can flourish, and within that community a strong economy can exist.

ABOUT THE ROLE Title: WRT BikeBox Intern Location: Waiheke Sustainability Centre, Waiheke Island (on-site only) Role type: Voluntary, unpaid internship — part-time with shifts available Thursday - Sunday, 12-4pm. Responsible to: WRT Bike Hub Project Lead

At Bike Hub Waiheke, we provide the Waiheke community with basic cycling maintenance tools and hands-on learning. We also divert bikes from the waste stream, on-selling used bikes and re-using parts. Part of the modal shift to active transport (cycling, walking, skateboarding etc.) that we want to promote means making cycling more accessible to everyone.

We would love an intern who will provide practical assistance to community members and help promote Bike Hub digitally. You don’t need to be available every day that Bike Hub is open.

YOU WILL

  • Be passionate about bikes, the environment and climate action
  • Know your way around basic bike maintenance and be keen to make a real contribution to the team. Knowing how to adjust gears and brakes, repair punctures and dismantle and rebuild bikes is preferred.
  • Be a good communicator who can engage with different people
  • Fit our culture, where good humour and mutual respect is key
  • Adopt WRT’s cultural statement, code of conduct, and policies
  • Use initiative and be able to work both independently and as part of a small dynamic team

DUTIES

  • Assist in running a coordinated Bike Hub campaign on site; manage stock, do inventory, serve customers and keep track of key performance indicator numbers
  • Take photos and do social media posting on Facebook and Instagram (with potential to start a TikTok) to reach out and engage with the community, sell pre-loved bikes and raise awareness about the benefits of cycling.
  • Help to diagnose problems on a bike and then guide the owner through the process of fixing it where possible.
  • Help repair and rebuild donated bikes for distribution to those who need one.
