Amitabha coordinates free compassionate companionship and practical support to elderly and incurably ill people of any age in their own homes across Auckland. As an Amitabha Support Companion you can make a valuable difference to someone’s quality of life with a weekly visit. This mahi aroha is very rewarding and a great way to give back within your own community.

Amitabha was founded on the Buddhist principles of kindness, equanimity and service and each client, volunteer and staff member is accorded equal respect and compassion with regard to their individuality and uniqueness as members of the larger universal human family. Amitabha is dedicated to developing and maintaining the highest quality of compassionate support in cooperation with other professional community services.

The Support Companion role involves visiting an assigned client in their own home, for a minimum of two hours each week on an ongoing basis. Visiting days and times are mutually agreed upon between the Support Companion and their client, as well as how the time is spent. Dependability and reliability are essential qualities for this role. Volunteer placements are based on client support needs and volunteer locations and Amitabha's small coordination team provide training and ongoing support.
