Coastguard Clyde
Coastguard Clyde is the Marine Search & Rescue service for all Central Otago lakes & rivers. Lakes Roxburgh and Dunstan are the prime operating areas but Clyde is also backup for Wanaka and Queenstown Coastguards. Coastguard New Zealand is the charity saving lives at sea and educating New Zealanders on how to stay safe on the water. Our rescue crews provide the primary maritime search and rescue service in New Zealand. Nationally, 2,300 Coastguard volunteers saved over 7,000 lives on our seas, lakes and rivers each year. Coastguard Clyde was started in 2004 by a group of boating enthusiasts and volunteer members. We shared a common love of the water and a firm belief that everyone should be able to enjoy sailing or boating with the knowledge that should anything go wrong, there would be emergency help available to them. After two years of hard work, we obtained a Coastguard Rescue Vessel and have since then, put our energy into achieving Coastguard training qualifications and providing search and rescue and on-water safety services for local groups on local waterways. We also fundraised to establish a permanent operational building on the grounds of the Department of Conservation Rural Fire Depot (now the Otago Rural Fire Authority) adjacent to Trail Journeys at Clyde. This was officially opened in October 2010. We are always on the lookout for volunteers to help reinforce our numbers.
