Roots of Empathy New Zealand
supported by Volunteering Services (BOP)
Roots of Empathy is an international, evidence-based classroom programme running in Aotearoa since 2007. Its mission is to build caring, peaceful, and civil societies through the development of empathy in tamariki. At the heart of the programme is a matua (parent) and their pēpi, who visit the classroom across the school year. With guidance from a trained Instructor, tamariki observe and reflect on the relationship between parent and pēpi, helping them to recognise feelings in themselves and others, enhancing social/emotional literacy.
