Hei Tatau Pounamu Restorative Justice Trust

Hei Tatau Pounamu Trust is a charitable trust formed by a group of mostly Māori practitioners who saw the need for restorative justice to be available for victims and offenders as offenders near parole. Our mission is to ensure all persons harmed by serious violence and sentenced prisoners have access to high quality post sentence restorative and re-integrative processes. Our Vision is to create a pathway or journey to recovery with integrity via a restorative process for both persons harmed and sentenced prisoners. Our Values are Tiriti o Waitangi, Pacific, Restorative, Respect and Reintegration. The aim of the Trust is to develop a tikanga-based framework of practice that can be utilised on a broader basis with government funding in the future. The opportunity provided by this process (pre-parole) allows victims to learn about the offender in the context of their whanau and see a pathway develop which supports the offender in positive ways forward, post-release.
