Co-founded by former Wellington SPCA CEO Steve Glassey, Animal Evac New Zealand has been formed to fill the void to assist emergency services and civil defence emergency management with the evacuation of animals during emergencies and disasters. We also plan to provide "pet friendly shelters" that provide temporary emergency sheltering of companion animals alongside human evacuation centres.

We are looking for a wide range of volunteers who can help administratively and operationally from across the country including:

1. Shelter Responders (setting up pet friendly shelters at evacuation centres)

2. Field Responders (searching for animals in disaster zones)

Where there is sufficient numbers of volunteers in a region, a regional coordinator can be appointed also to coordinate local activities in partnership with local emergency services/management, as well as fundraise for regionally based resources (i.e. evac and shelter support trailers).

Though not essential, we are looking for former or current veterinary professionals, animal care/welfare/control professionals, large animal/horse owners, police/fire/ambulance/rescue officers, NZRT or Red Cross responders, information technology specialists, accountants, and lawyers. Many supporting roles can be virtual (home based) and not operational in nature.

Field Responders typically require more training, must be able to swim and require a higher level of fitness.

After our two day induction course, you can be added to our response database and in the event of an emergency, and request of the lead agency, Animal Evac NZ may call upon you to assist as a volunteer, either in the field or in a pet friendly shelter. Other additional training may be required depending on your interests and skills. Attending an annual refresher/exercise may also be required.

You will need to have a clean criminal background and over the age of 16, unless your parent/guardian is volunteering also.

As we are a start up, beyond the two core Sheltering and Field Responder roles, tell us if you have an area of expertise that you want to help in.

Additional requirements

Applicants interested in operational roles, should have routine experience in handling animals unknown to them. And no animal allergies.

2 days initial + 1 day annual refresher as minimum.
