New Zealand Red Cross provides a variety of support services for refugees accepted by the Government for resettlement in New Zealand. NZRC employs social workers and cross-cultural workers and operates a nationwide network of trained volunteers to help welcome and provide practical support, friendship and advocacy for refugee clients during their initial months of resettlement in New Zealand.
The volunteer role includes participation in the following:
• setting up a home for a refugee family or individual before they arrive • helping the family enrol with schools and doctors • budgeting, shopping, how to use an ATM • showing the family how to use public transportation • and generally explaining how things work in New Zealand.
