About this opportunity
We are recruiting volunteers for Operation Tidy Fox! With the support of the Department of Conservation, Operation Tidy Fox is using volunteer manpower to aid clean-up efforts in the Fox Riverbed.
Running from 19 June 2019, Operation Tidy Fox is starting with a volunteer capacity of 30 volunteers per day, with plans to scale up in the following weeks. Our end goal is to establish a full-scale clean-up operation and remove all the waste washed out from the Fox Legacy Landfill. We are supplying accommodation, lunch and dinner. Volunteers will also be transported to and from the work area.
The South Westland floods in March 2019 washed out an estimated 5,500 tonnes of waste from the Fox Glacier landfill. Now, millions of pieces of plastic are tangled in debris along the 25 km of the Fox River, floating in the ocean, and washing up along 150 km of coastline.
Ten weeks on from the incident, it is estimated that less than 1% of the waste has been collected, and less than 5% of the Fox riverbed has been cleaned up. It is a massive clean-up operation and we need your support.
